Cappuccino within arm’s reach

Who doesn’t want cappuccino within arm’s reach??

We’re currently renovating our new office space, and believe me, caffeine is a major driver in the design process (and let’s face it, with design projects in general). Not only do we want a functional, streamlined kitchen space, but as part of our open plan work area, it also has to look A+.

As a side note, this office space is on the lower level of our home, so therefore, outside of office hours, this kitchenette may also supplement our modestly-sized kitchen when we entertain upstairs. I have had grand dreams of a butler’s pantry, where I would store homemade pies and hors d’oeuvres trays, but life in the city leads to adapting your dreams to more compact spaces!

all the considerations

Like designing any kitchen, the planning process is like a complex puzzle. I always liken it to the small square games where one must shift around the squares to complete the image. A kitchenette is on a smaller scale, but the steps are similar:

  • Which type and size of appliances are required? (Espresso maker and wine fridge, natch)

  • Are there any obstructions or defining architectural features, such as bulkheads and windows?

  • Which cabinetry configuration best suits your needs? Think deep drawers, open shelving, pantry units?

  • What is your budget?

maximizing the space

With only six and a half feet at our disposal, we’re looking to optimize the configuration. Below the countertop, we’ll install functional drawers, a wine fridge, and a microwave oven. We found a perfectly proportioned sink called Pekoe at American Standard, and under-mounting it will maximize the countertop space. It’s just deep enough to hide the occasional stray coffee mug! Always the jewelry in a kitchen, the upscale Grohe Essence faucet in classic sparkling chrome will add height and elegance to the countertop area. Balancing out the proportions, we’ll add some tall cabinetry above the countertop on the other end.

As for cabinetry finishes, I am playing with custom door colours. Currently torn between dark, dramatic grey against a modern, feminine blush tint…Stay tuned!

Many thanks to Grohe Canada and American Standard Canada for supplying the products mentioned above. We truly cannot wait to see them installed in our beautiful new space!
