The bespoke sofa experience

Not all interior designers have the same passions. Early on, I discovered that I had a particular passion for fabrics (this will definitely be the topic of another blog post!), and as I moved into the field of interior design, a passion for beautiful furniture. Fortunately, in Toronto, I can indulge these passions in a number of showrooms that cater specifically to the design trade.

One of my favourite parts of working with design clients is the “sit-test”. This is an afternoon of testing sofas and chairs to find “the one”. But the beauty of working with an interior designer is being able to bypass the big box stores, and going directly to the manufacturer’s showrooms. Armed with specific style ideas, I encourage my clients try out different models, and assess the comfort, proportions, and detailing. Height and depth changes can be made, and cushion fill firmed up or upgraded to accommodate personal stature and posture requirements. We have been working with these manufacturers for a number of years, and they are happy to take the time to explain the process of getting the best fit. This is especially helpful for those with back problems. Arm, leg and cushion styles can be altered to suit the overall design vision. Because the furniture is made in-house (shop local!), we often take a tour of the work area to see how it is constructed.

By this point in the design process, we will have made some initial fabric choices, and we can discuss how these fabrics will be applied to the chosen furniture, and the details that will make the pieces unique.

It’s a relaxed, personalized event, and truly creates a luxury buying experience. My clients come away feeling confident of their purchase and well-informed of the details that go into the construction of quality bespoke furniture.

Imagine sinking into this Finchley chair, a client favourite. Its proportions and fill can be customized to suit, and a vast number of fabrics can be used, depending on the style of the project.
